Albert Arenas further extended his lead in the 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship on Sunday, despite being denied the win in a last lap battle for the second time this weekend. The 2020 Moto3 World Champion was in the top two for the entire race, leading most of the laps after the order settled after a frenetic start, which saw fellow Yamaha R9 riders Roberto Garcia (GMT94 Yamaha) and Aldi Satya Mahendra (AS BLU CRU Racing) lead in the early laps.

Looking strong in the final laps, Arenas looked set to take his third victory of the season until a late attack from Jaume Masia thwarted his charge. Garcia (GMT94), who had also fought for the win, had to settle for fourth in the closing stages ahead of Mahendra, who enjoyed one of his strongest dry races in WorldSSP to date.

Hampered by a back-of-the-grid-start in Race 1, Can Öncü (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) rider was unable to make up ground in race two, crossing the line 11th to conclude a difficult weekend. It was also a challenging event for Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha), who retired from the race after 11 laps. Despite missing out on the home win, Arenas’ leaves Aragon with a 40-point advantage over Masia in the championship standings as the season reaches its halfway point. Öncü remains fourth in the standings, 69 points from his R9 rival.

The championship resumes at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli between 12-14 June.

Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing): Race 2: 2nd, Championship: 1st (206 points)

“It is hard to be happy, because I come racing to win and was beat on the last lap twice this weekend even though I felt I showed I was the fastest rider. This is hard to take, but we have to look at the positives – our consistency is super good, it’s another podium and we extended the championship lead. Thanks to my team and to Yamaha for a great bike, it worked really well in the hot conditions.”
