Yamaha has announced a significant step forward for its successful BLU CRU racing programme, with the FIM Yamaha BLU CRU World Cup moving to the more powerful R7 platform for the 2027 season.

Yamaha Motor Europe has confirmed that the FIM Yamaha BLU CRU World Cup will enter a new chapter in 2027, replacing the R3 with the larger-capacity R7 as the championship continues to develop the next generation of international motorcycle racing talent. Originally launched in 2021 as the Yamaha R3 BLU CRU Cup, the series achieved official FIM World Cup status in 2024 and has since established itself as an important stepping stone for young riders aspiring to compete at world championship level. Following six successful seasons with the R3, the move to the R7 represents a natural progression for the championship and its competitors.

Part of Yamaha’s award-winning BLU CRU programme, the newly named FIM Yamaha R7 BLU CRU World Cup is organised in collaboration with the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the Dorna WorldSBK Organisation, with event management provided by JiR. The championship is designed to offer talented young riders a professionally managed and fully supported route into international competition. Open to competitors aged 15 and over, the 2027 series will feature 12 races across six European rounds of the FIM Superbike World Championship, providing valuable exposure to the WorldSBK paddock and the opportunity to compete on some of Europe’s most established racing circuits.

Yamaha’s wider BLU CRU initiative has become an important part of the manufacturer’s racing development structure, identifying promising riders and providing the technical support, professional guidance and competitive environment needed to progress through the sport. More than 1,000 young riders benefited from BLU CRU activities during 2026, highlighting the scale and international reach of the programme. In road racing, the pathway extends through to the BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2 Team, where Izan Guevara has been challenging for the 2026 FIM Moto2 World Championship title.

One of the programme’s most notable success stories is Indonesian rider Aldi Satya Mahendra, who finished runner-up during his debut R3 BLU CRU season in 2023 before progressing into world championship competition. In 2024, Mahendra made history by becoming Indonesia’s first motorcycle road-racing world champion, demonstrating the opportunities available to riders emerging through Yamaha’s development system. His progression continued in 2026 when he became the first Indonesian rider to secure a podium finish in the World Supersport Championship.

The championship’s international appeal has continued to grow, with the 2026 grid featuring more than 19 full-time riders representing over ten countries, including Brazil, the Dominican Republic and the United States. Japanese competitor Riichi Takahira became the first rider from his country to claim the series title, while the introduction of the FIM Sportbike World Championship in 2026 provided another opportunity for BLU CRU graduates to advance their careers. Ten former R3 World Cup competitors joined the inaugural Sportbike World Championship grid, including 2025 BLU CRU champion Alessandro di Persio.

For 2027, competitors will race the latest generation Yamaha R7, introduced for the 2026 model year and powered by the manufacturer’s established 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine. The motorcycle has already demonstrated its racing potential in the FIM Sportbike World Championship, where Carter Thompson has secured multiple podium finishes and two victories. The move to the R7 will provide young competitors with a more powerful and demanding racing platform, helping to develop the skills required for progression into higher levels of international competition.

Despite the move to a larger motorcycle, Yamaha remains committed to making the championship as accessible as possible for aspiring racers. The complete 2027 season package is priced at €29,000 and includes the use of a race-prepared Yamaha R7, racing leathers, tyres, fuel and race entry fees. The championship will begin with a pre-season test at Cremona in Italy during April before the opening race weekend at the historic TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands.
