The 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship got underway in dramatic fashion in Canada, with Cooper Webb and Max Anstie taking the opening SX1 and SX2 victories of the new season at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium. The Canadian GP marked the championship’s debut in Calgary and delivered an action packed evening of racing as riders battled for the first points of the six round global series. The evening ultimately ended earlier than planned when a flash storm hit the Calgary area during the final SX1 race. The FIM made the decision to stop proceedings on safety grounds, with the results from the completed races used to determine the overall SX1 classification.
Cooper Webb made an impressive start to his first full World Supercross campaign, securing the SX1 overall victory for Rick Ware Racing. Justin Hill had opened proceedings by taking victory in Sprint Race 1 after showing strong pace throughout practice and qualifying. Webb responded in Sprint Race 2, producing an impressive performance to take the win and put himself firmly in contention for the overall. With the final SX1 race subsequently brought to an early conclusion, Webb’s results were enough to secure victory ahead of Dean Wilson in second and Hill in third.
“It was sick, honestly it was beautiful to get the win,” said Webb. “It was pretty gnarly and, as we see, the weather’s coming in, so we had a red flag, but I was really feeling good.”
In SX2, defending World Champion Max Anstie made the perfect start to his title defence, completing a clean sweep of all three races on his debut for Rick Ware Racing. The British rider faced plenty of pressure from Stark Racing’s Brian Hsu and Michael Hicks, with the electric powered machines proving particularly impressive away from the start gate. Hsu led the opening laps of all three races, while the Stark riders consistently demonstrated their acceleration by securing the holeshot. However, Anstie’s experience and racecraft ultimately proved decisive. He took victory in both Sprint Races before completing the clean sweep with another win in the Main Event.
“It was tough. The track was gnarly and I think the electric bikes were maybe the toughest obstacle,” said Anstie. “At the start they were gone and it was a really tricky track to make up time.”
Michael Hicks secured second overall, delivering Stark its first World Supercross podium, while Cameron McAdoo impressed on his championship debut to take third. Following an eventful opening round, Webb and Anstie leave Canada leading the SX1 and SX2 championship standings respectively. The 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship continues with round two in Birmingham on 10 October.
