Touratech has expanded its range of adventure motorcycle protection equipment with the introduction of its heavy-duty Expedition engine guard for the KTM 1390 Super Adventure, available for both the road-focused S and off-road-oriented R models.
Touratech has developed a new model-specific version of its Expedition engine guard for the KTM 1390 Super Adventure, offering additional protection for riders who regularly venture beyond the tarmac. Powered by a 1,350cc V-twin engine producing 175hp, the KTM 1390 Super Adventure is one of the most powerful adventure motorcycles currently available, combining long-distance touring ability with impressive off-road credentials. While the S version is primarily designed for road riding and gravel tracks, the R is aimed at riders who enjoy tackling more demanding terrain. Regardless of which model is chosen, protecting the vulnerable underside of the engine becomes particularly important when riding over rocks, ruts and other obstacles.
The new Expedition engine guard has been engineered specifically for the KTM 1390 Super Adventure and forms part of Touratech’s range of accessories designed to withstand particularly challenging riding conditions. Manufactured from a high-strength, four-millimetre-thick aluminium alloy, the guard features a welded, multi-folded construction designed to provide excellent rigidity without unnecessary bulk. The base plate incorporates several reinforced edges to increase structural strength, allowing it to withstand the impacts and stresses commonly encountered during serious off-road riding.
Rather than simply providing a flat protective plate beneath the motorcycle, Touratech has carefully shaped the guard to follow the contours of the KTM’s engine and surrounding components. This ensures protection for the oil sump, lower engine casings, auxiliary components and exhaust manifolds, while maintaining the motorcycle’s existing ground clearance and lean angle. Finished in black anodised aluminium, the guard also complements the aggressive styling of the Super Adventure, giving the motorcycle a purposeful, rally-inspired appearance.
An important element of the design is the high-strength stainless steel mounting structure, which works in conjunction with the aluminium guard to manage the forces generated during an impact. Rather than concentrating the load in one area, the construction is designed to dissipate impact energy and distribute any remaining forces more evenly through the motorcycle’s frame. This arrangement provides additional protection against stones thrown up by the front wheel, as well as direct contact with rocks, exposed edges, tree stumps and other obstacles that can cause significant damage to vulnerable engine components.
Touratech has also incorporated two heavy-duty plastic sliding rails along the underside of the guard, drawing inspiration from the skid plates used in enduro competition. These rails are designed to help the motorcycle slide over obstacles rather than becoming caught on uneven surfaces, particularly when crossing rocks or fallen timber. They also serve a second practical purpose by covering the recessed mounting bolts, protecting the fastener heads from damage during off-road use. This should make removing the guard for servicing or maintenance considerably easier, even after prolonged riding in difficult conditions.
Despite its heavy-duty construction, Touratech says the Expedition engine guard has been designed for straightforward installation, with detailed fitting instructions supplied. It is compatible with both the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R and S models, providing a practical upgrade for owners seeking additional protection without compromising the motorcycle’s everyday usability or off-road capability.
The Touratech Expedition engine guard for the KTM 1390 Super Adventure is available through the company’s online shop under part number 376-5135.
