A new documentary exploring the history, drama and personalities of the legendary North West 200 road race is set to premiere in Belfast on November 9th, ahead of a wider cinema release later in the month. Entitled Bigger, Better, Faster, the Zerofit-commissioned film has been produced and directed by motorcycle adventurer and television personality Charley Boorman, with filming taking place during this year’s North West 200 in May.
Created by filmmaker Luke Whatley-Bigg, the documentary captures the extraordinary atmosphere surrounding the 97-year-old event, which takes place on the famous Triangle Circuit linking Portrush, Portstewart and Coleraine. At the centre of the story is Glenn Irwin, the most successful Superbike rider in North West 200 history, who returned to the event in 2026 following a year away from the coastal circuit. The film follows Irwin’s efforts to further cement his remarkable racing legacy, while also exploring the emotional impact of road racing on the families who support those competing.
Boorman spends time with Irwin’s partner Laura and his parents, Alan and Margaret, offering viewers an insight into the personal sacrifices and emotions experienced away from the track. The documentary also features several familiar faces from the road racing paddock, including Peter Hickman, Alastair Seeley and Jeremy McWilliams, alongside North West newcomer Storm Stacey. Boorman visits the Giant’s Causeway to meet Seeley, while McWilliams reflects on his remarkable longevity in motorcycle racing, continuing to compete at the highest level well into his 60s.
Another interesting aspect of the film is its examination of the financial realities of motorcycle racing. Boorman meets privately funded competitors, including Carlton Bell Racing, highlighting the considerable differences in resources available to teams competing at the same event. BBC Sport presenter Stephen Watson, who has covered the North West 200 for more than three decades, also features prominently. During a visit to the Dunlop Memorial Gardens, Watson discusses the extraordinary contribution of the Dunlop family to Irish motorcycle road racing.
North West 200 Event Director Mervyn Whyte and his team provided the filmmakers with unprecedented access throughout race week, allowing cameras behind the scenes to capture the celebrations, disappointments and challenges that make the event so special. Bigger, Better, Faster will receive its red-carpet premiere at Movie House CitySide in Belfast on November 9th, followed by screenings at Movie House cinemas across Northern Ireland later that month. A worldwide release through streaming platforms is planned for early 2027.
