As the Irish Minibike Championship prepares to launch its 2026 season, attention turns to an unmissable opening round at Nutts Corner on Sunday, 19th April. This year’s event carries special significance, as it hosts the Gene McDonnell Memorial Trophy race, honouring one of the most respected figures in Irish motorcycling.

This season marks 40 years since Gene McDonnell’s passing following a tragic accident during the 1986 250cc Isle of Man TT. In an incident widely regarded as one of the most shocking in TT history, Gene collided with a runaway horse that had been startled by a helicopter arriving to assist an injured rider. Both Gene and the horse lost their lives instantly. The Irish Minibike Championship is proud to commemorate his life and achievements with an event that brings together the wider racing community in his memory.

The McDonnell family, who have supported the championship for the past five years through their sponsorship of the Open class, will be in attendance once again. The prestigious Gene McDonnell Memorial Cup will be presented to this year’s winner, continuing a tradition that reflects the family’s ongoing connection to the sport. Adding to the occasion, a special display will feature two of Gene’s most significant machines, the 350G Yamaha he purchased himself and the 250 EMC Rotax, the final bike he raced. It offers a unique opportunity for riders and fans to connect with a remarkable chapter of Irish racing history.

One of the highlights of the day will be the 10 lap Gene McDonnell Memorial Race, a fitting tribute that promises both competitive action and a celebration of the passion Gene brought to the sport. It is expected to be a standout moment as the new season gets underway.

With a fresh championship about to begin, the event also signals an important moment for riders across all classes. A strong field of local competitors is set to take part, including Boyd and Sonny Knipe, Jax Cunningham, Archie Eastwood, who is making his debut, Jordan Greer, James Harkness, Raymond Glendinning, Michael Owens, Leon Simpson, Raymond McKnight and Oisin O’Neil. The line-up is further strengthened by short circuit and road racing talent such as Luke Johnston, Lee Hara, and Jack and Alex Whearty.

Spectators can expect a full day of racing and a great atmosphere as the paddock comes to life for the opening round of the season. Families, supporters and motorsport enthusiasts are all encouraged to attend and be part of what promises to be a meaningful and memorable occasion. The Irish Minibike Championship extends an open invitation to everyone to join them at Nutts Corner this Sunday to honour Gene McDonnell and celebrate the start of a new season together. Racing is scheduled to begin at approximately 11.00 am.
