Championship Leader Mahias Looking to Extend Advantage in Italy

11 May, 2017

GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP rider Lucas Mahias arrives in Imola for round five of the 2017 FIM World Supersport Championship this weekend leading the standings by 20 points and full of confidence he can battle for the race win once more. His teammate Federico Caricasulo is also looking to build on his promising start to the season on the new 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 as he aims to return to the podium in Italy.

Mahias leads the way in the championship standings with 65 points after scoring three podiums in the first four races. The French rider rode brilliantly in Assen to secure second and see his lead extend to 20 points over Sheridan Morais behind him. The 28-year-old already has one race win under his belt in Aragon, demonstrating the incredible potential of the new Yamaha YZF-R6. He hasn’t had the best of luck at Imola in the past, but is determined to turn that fortune around at the iconic 4.936km Imola circuit this weekend.

His teammate Caricasulo, race winner in Buriram, is looking to build on what has already been an extremely encouraging start to the season for the 21-year-old. The Italian is currently sixth in the championship with 35 points after four races, one point behind the man in fifth Kyle Ryde and just ten points behind Morais in second. He is looking forward to racing in front of his passionate home crowd and hopes to return to the podium after securing a creditable sixth place in Assen.

The GRT Yamaha WorldSSP team take to the track on Friday at 11am local time for Free Practice 1, with qualifying on Saturday and the race at 11.30am on Sunday.
